Philips 42PF9631D 42in Plasma TV

In case you hadn’t noticed, HD DVD vs Blu-ray is not the only vicious format war currently raging within the AV industry. For also currently tearing chunks out of each other are LCD and plasma flat TV technologies. In fact, this screen war has just been kicked up a gear by Hitachi, Pioneer and Panasonic, who’ve actually joined forces to remind the public of the supposed strengths of plasma over LCD technology via a barrage of in-store materials and an in-depth, pull-no-punches website: www.plasma-lcd-facts.eu.

While a good format war always gives us hacks plenty to write about, it’s always a relief to find a few brands that prefer to stay neutral by supporting both camps. And one of the most high profile of these neutral players is Philips. In fact, Philips’ refusal to choose one flat TV option over the other even extends to the most heavily contested size of the flat TV market: 42in. So while we’ve already tested a Philips 42in LCD TV, the 42PF5421, we now also find ourselves faced with a 42in Philips plasma TV in the form of the 42PF9631D.

The $64,000 question, of course, is whether Philips’ egalitarian gesture of allowing Joe Public to decide which format of 42in TV he wants is really worthwhile, or whether the brand does one technology so much better than the other that it really might as well stick with what it does best…

The 42PF9631D is certainly no half-hearted effort aesthetically. The deep, glossy black screen frame is really eye-catching, and provides the perfect counterpoint to the set’s most in-your-face feature: Ambilight.

If you’re not familiar with this, it comprises fluorescent tubes down each side of the TV that can emit pools of light that automatically change colour in sympathy with the main colour components of the picture at any given time. This sounds horrendously gimmicky, we’ll grant you; but honestly, as well as looking cooler than you might think, it also genuinely makes long-term viewing more relaxing by broadening the area of brightness that your eyes are focussed on.

JVC to launch World’s thinnest tuner-equipped LCD TV

Jvc_lcdTV.jpg
Establishing a new benchmark in flat panel TV design, JVC in July will market the world's thinnest LCD TVs
with built-in tuners. The new line of super-slim Full HD TVs also weigh less and consume less power than conventional LCD TVs. JVC's new slim LCD TVs, feature a cabinet that across most of its width measures a mere 39mm deep, with a maximum depth of just 74mm at the panel's center. The design ensures that from nearly any angle, the sets present a super-slim appearance. Complementing the slim design is a thinner bezel, further minimizing the presence of the cabinet. The new super-slim design will be available in two screen sizes in the U.S., the 42-inch LT-42SL89 and the 46-inch LT-46SL89. Both offer 1920 x 1080p resolution. JVC's new slim LCD TVs weighs only 12kg and consumes a mere 145W.

LG Electronics 42PG25

LG Electronics' 42PG25 boasts an attractive price ($1,299.95)and impressive features, including eight inputs (four HDMI, two composite and two component), S-Video and two optical outputs, plus a USB port for viewing your photos and listening to your MP3s.

This 42-inch plasma HDTV also produced good-looking images, though it struggled a bit with fast-motion video -- more so than several 42-inch 120-Hz LCD models that we matched it against. Despite these image quirks, however, our jury rated its images Good overall; at least one juror rated them Very Good when motion wasn't an issue.

Though not the fanciest HDTV you can buy, nor the one with the best image quality, the 42PG25 is an attractive set -- and its low price enhances its appeal.

Power HDTVs

These nine HDTVs -- representing a mix of plasma and 120-Hz LCD models -- are generally powerful enough to keep up with the fastest action on your screen.

Vizio SV420XVT

Vizio's TVs often lead in price and image quality, and this model is no exception: The SV420XVTis the least-expensive ($1,049.99) 120-Hz LCD we've seen, and it finished ahead of competing 42-inch models in our performance tests, too.

While the SV420XVT earned top scores in image quality, it does have some drawbacks. It's difficult to set up, and it lacks a number of useful features, such as a quick menu for frequently altered settings or a USB port or SD Card slot for photos and music.

Still, if you're looking for the best HDTV picture for the price, you may be inclined to overlook these issues.
