Notebook

Fujitsu U Series

Built upon the tiny Fujitsu U1010, the U2010 and U/B850 are Fujitsu's most powerful UMPCs to date. Weighing just 1.3 lbs, the new Fujitsu has an equally impressive 5.6" screen with the highest resolution we have seen on a UMPC, 1280x800 pixels. Use it as a miniature laptop or rotate the screen and the U makes a super portable tablet PC.
The U series is based on the speedy Intel Atom processor running at 1.6 GHz and its battery is rated at 3.5 hours. Other specs include 1GB max RAM, 60 GB HDD (or optional 120gb and 64gb SSD), 2 USB ports, and a VGA/LAN adapter.

Toshiba RX2

Toshiba RX2 Since business travelers long for a notebook to be incredibly light and small but large enough for a 12" screen and 17mm (or better) keypitch keyboard, come equipped with a solid-state drive, super multi-DVD, and have the power of Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU, Toshiba put their engineers to the task, to conventional wisdom (and some would say cost restraints) out the window, and crafted this seminal ultralight notebook.

The RX2 boasts a high-quality wide aspect ratio (1280x800) 12.1" LED-backlit display. LED backlighting provides both more luminescence and longer battery life. This crisp display gives you a little extra desktop workspace, and it is great for watching videos.

Its mechanical hard drive has been replaced by a 128GB solid-state drive. Solid-state drives are more expensive, but offer some great advantages: faster performance, less battery usage, and greater reliability. Unlike mechanical hard drives, SSDs are unlikely to lose data in the event that your computer is dropped. In general, Toshiba boasts its durability including water resistance. (It is not waterPROOF and does not have warranty coverage for water damage.)

A specially designed 7mm thick super multi-DVD module helps it to become the world's lightest notebook with integrated optical drive. It weighs 1.88 pounds (848g) and is only 0.77 in. (19.5mm) thick.

The Toshiba RX2 features a low-voltage Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 1.4GHz and 3GB of RAM. That CPU helps it to achieve, despite its lightness, an impressive 6-hour standard and 12-hour enhanced, battery life. (Manufacturer list times should be approximately halved to estimate real-world performance.)

Lenovo ThinkPad X300

The ThinkPad x300 brings a 13.3" widescreen to a 3-pound package. Dynamism has long been the retail pioneer of ultra-thin and lightweight notebooks, and a decade ago we brought you the groundbreaking (for its time) IBM ThinkPad PC110. We think the Lenovo ThinkPad x300 offers another great leap forward in mobile computing.

With a 64gb solid-state drive, integrated DVD burner (optional), and great portability, this is a great business traveler's platform. The 13.3" widescreen offers impressive 1440 x 900 resolution, which is higher than competitors in a similar category. It also offers a removable battery, three USB ports, Ethernet, wi-fi, and Bluetooth.

Panasonic F-Series

Panasonic's thinnest, lightest-weight Toughbook computers are a smart choice for busy professionals. These sleek, slimline laptops have a resilient magnesium alloy case, spill resistant keyboard, and up to 9 hours of battery life. Equally at home on a plane or in a boardroom, they're designed for on-the-go executives and are engineered to handle all the drops and bumps of daily business life.

The Panasonic F series is the latest Toughbook with a built-in carrying handle. Available in six colors, the Panasonic F is a powerhouse with Intel's Core 2 Duo, up to 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HD, and a drop resistant case. The F series comes standard with a large 14.1" WXGA+ screen, built-in DVD-RW and weighs just 3.7 lbs.

Inspiron Mini 10 finally shows up at Dell's website

In one of the most bizarre sequences of events we can recall, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 has finally arrived on its maker's website. And this is after being briefly (and we stress "briefly") unveiled in a 3- x 3-foot cubical at CES, being impersonated at Tecso by the smaller Mini 9 and showing up early on QVC. Yeah, weird. At any rate, we knew that the Round Rock powerhouse was looking to offer this pup up for sale starting on the 26th, so we figure now is a perfect time to host up a holding place in order to get people informed. As we'd heard, it'll sport a 10.1-inch display, 802.11b/g WiFi, optional Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI out, an external DVD drive, upwards of 160GB of HDD space, 1GB of RAM, a keyboard that's 92 percent the size of a standard laptop (that's the same as on ASUS' Eee PC 1000HE, by the way), a multitouch trackpad, 720p media playback, optional WWAN, an internal TV tuner and your choice of a 3-cell (3 hours) or 6-cell (6.5 hours) battery. Yummy!

Aspire One A150

Photos of a black Acer Aspire One with a 6-cell battery pack have emerged, believed to be the Aspire One A150. The photos are by Flickr user unten44; specifications of the netbook are in keeping with the current Aspire One netbook range, with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard-drive. In fact, the only key difference other than the case color is the battery life, which Acer rate for up to 6hrs use.

acer_aspire_one_black_1-480x317

The Aspire One A150 has three USB 2.0 ports, VGA output, audio in/out and dual memory card readers. It also has WiFi a/b/g and wired ethernet, and weighs 1.26kg with the new, double-capacity battery (that’s 160g more than the 3-cell variants). User feedback suggests around 5hrs runtime from the larger pack.

It’s already available, priced at ($498) and to be, at least initially, the only way to get a black netbook from Acer. You can see our review of the Acer Aspire One here.

Logitech Waves Hello to New Keyboard and Mouse

Logitech has issued two updates today, the Wave Keyboard and the MX1100 mouse. The cordless combo can be had in a bundle, or the mouse can be had separately, in which case it foregoes the rechargeable battery and instead runs on a couple of AAs.

The bundled mouse actually uses a USB cord for charging, which means that although you'll be tethered, you can keep on mousing while it gets juiced. This is a distinct improvement on the otherwise excellent MX1000, which had a big ugly charging station and power cord, into which the mouse would never quite sit.

The Desktop Wave Pro is all about the curves, with a double contoured keyboard (U-shaped from above and a shallow W-shape from the front) and curved a palm rest. You also get a row of media buttons along the top.

Both keyboard and mouse use the 2.4 GHz frequency instead of Bluetooth. This does mean you'll need a dongle, but it also means less interference and more accurate tracking.

Intel's Atom and tiny devices to fit

Atom processor with the Intel System Controller Hub

Intel unveils its Atom processor (formerly known as Silverthorne) for MID or mobile Internet devices at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai. Intel says the Atom chip and the Centrino Atom version use about 3 watts of power compared to 35-watt chips that are now found in notebooks.

"This is as important to Intel as the launch of the Pentium in the mid-1990s", Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said in a video played during an IDF keynote.

Here is the Atom processor with the Intel System Controller Hub. For more information read Larry Dignan's blog.

Phenom 9600 Black Edition

The Sunnyvale-based chipmaker today announced three new additions to its Phenom X4 family of quadcore processors. Among them are the company's new flagship desktop CPU, the X4 9950 Black Edition (BE) as well as two other energy-efficient offerings, the X4 9350e and X4 9150e.

As its Black Edition branding indicates, AMD's latest 2.6GHz offering is clearly aimed at enthusiasts, gamers and overclockers. (AMD chips with Black Edition labels do not have a locked multiplier, which typically facilitates overclocking.) Based on several benchmarks already posted on the Web, theX4 9950 BE seems to have a performance edge over the previous flagship model, the X4 9850, which makes it possibly the fastest CPU from AMD so far.

Since AMD released its Barcelona server chips last month, PC users have been wondering when that native quad-core goodness might arrive in the form of AMD Phenom desktop CPUs. According to a report on VR-Zone, we'll see the first two quad-core Phenom chips next month. The site reports that the 2.2GHz Phenom X4 9500 and the 2.4GHz Phenom X4 9600 will launch some time in November. These Phenom 9000-series parts will feature 512KB of L2 cache per core, 2MB of shared L3 cache, a 3.6GHz HyperTransport 3.0 bus, and an 89W power rating. A third chip will join the line in December--the 2.6GHz Phenom X4 9700 that will have a 4GHz bus and a 125W power rating.

The higher-end Phenom FX line is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2008 with the Phenom FX-82, which reportedly will feature a clock speed of 2.6GHz or higher.

For its part, AMD would neither confirm nor deny the Phenom rumors making the rounds this week.

SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5"

SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5", a solid state drive with up to 64-gigabyte (GB)* flash memory, is a drop-in replacement for the hard disk drive. This popular form factor and Serial ATA (SATA) interface are ideal for thin and light notebooks, the largest mobile PC segment in the enterprise space.

Highly Durable:
SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" is based on technology that has been field-proven for over a decade in the harshest of environments. It uses NAND flash enhanced by our patented flash management technology. SanDisk SSD delivers an outstanding two million hour mean time to failure (MTTF)1 rate. This superior level results in reduced tangible costs, such as IT labor costs, while also decreasing intangible costs associated with inaccessible data that can negatively affect business reputations.

Enhanced Performance:
With no moving parts, SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" does not need to spin up into action or to seek files in the way that conventional hard disk drives do, while also eliminating the limitations of random seek performance. These characteristics, combined with SanDisk advanced flash management technology, enable SanDisk SSD to achieve performance that is approximately twice as fast as the hard disk drive2. SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" achieves a sustained read rate of 68-megabyte (MB)*/sec and a random read rate of over 4800 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) for a 4k-byte transfer3.

These performance figures boost system performance and enhance the user experience. For instance, SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" can boot Microsoft Windows® Vista™ Enterprise on a laptop in as little as 30 seconds4. SanDisk SSD achieves an average file access rate of 0.11 milliseconds.2 On Windows Experience Index for Microsoft® Vista™, SanDisk SSD scores 5.6 out of a total 5.9.5

Power Efficient:
Another advantage of SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" is its low power consumption rate, less than 50%, compared to the hard disk drive: 1.0W during active operation versus 2.4W. This is particularly important to extend the battery life for the benefit of road warriors.

* 1 megabyte (MB) = 1 million bytes; 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some of the listed capacity is used for formatting and other functions, and thus is not available for data storage. Read more.

Seagate 500GB eSATA External HDD

In this day and age, where we all have hundreds of gigabytes of music, videos , games, many computer users are looking for some form of external storage to back up vital data from their main PC to give them that much needed data security in case of an emergency. While a Network Attached Storage solution is typically the best choice in most cases, certainly where large amounts of storage is required, those who want to move their backed up data around various physical locations will find that a NAS appliance doesn't necessarily fit their needs.

In this case, the ideal solution is an external hard drive enclosure, or so you'd think. Back in the middle of October, we had a look at Cooler Master's X-Craft USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, finding it to be a little more expensive than most drive-less enclosures, but still a relatively decent buy. After testing the X-Craft, we decided that it'd be interesting to have a look at an all-in-one solution - specifically, in the form of Seagate's 500GB eSATA device.

Seagate's enclosure is about 60mm deep, 180mm long and 165mm across, making it slightly larger than your average hard drive enclosure. The aesthetics are fairly bland in the grand scheme of things, at least in comparison to Cooler Master's sleek X-Craft design, but then this is more of a consumer device, rather than being designed for the enthusiast.

Inside the enclosure, Seagate has included a 500GB, 7,200 RPM drive with 16MB of cache and support for Native Command Queuing and hot-swapping. Not surprisingly, this is right in line with Seagate's 500GB desktop drives, which sport almost exactly the same specifications on paper.

The Enermax Noisetaker 485 watt

Enermax Noisetaker 485 watt power supply

The Enermax Noisetaker 485 watt is slightly smaller in output than its bigger brother, but is at a price that is much more within the range of normal buying. It offers the same high quality, but with a power output that is less, but still enough for nearly all computers.

485 watts might not seem like much compared to the 800W monsters that can be seem around. However, it is more than enough for a computer that has a PCIe graphics card, 2 SATA drives, 2 sticks of 512MB memory and the usual array of gadgets.

Here is a brief list of features…

  • 485W power output
  • 2 fans for cooling needs
  • Convertible 20/24 pin adapter

The Enermax Noisetaker is a fairly plain power supply that just does what it is supposed to do. One of the neater features is that it lets the fans run on after you have turned the computer off. This could be a benefit or a drawback, depending on your point of view, but by turning the power supply off you can make them turn off.

Enermax is one of the more well known makers of power supplies. It has been around for a few years and its products are reliable. In fact I would recommend either it, or one of it major competitors for any power supply upgrades.

The Enermax will not disappoint in terms of performance, delivering smooth power to the parts of your computer that need it most. A clean power supply is especially good for those components that are most sensitive to power variations, like processors.

This power supply, although not a bargain, gives you more of what you need for a reasonable price. It is enough, even if you have lots of parts in your computer. At around a 100 bucks, it makes good sense for an upgrade, especially if you are going to upgrade the other major components in your computer.

NVIDIA Ion platform to support VIA Nano processors this year

It's pretty clear NVIDIA already has some big plans for its new nettop / netbook-specific Ion platform, and it looks like its reach is about to get broader still, with company president Jen-Hsun Huang reportedly confirming that the platform will also support VIA's Nano processor by the end of the year. As you may recall, the two companies had been in off and on talks about a partnership last year before things finally fell though in November, and there was even a point where it seemed like NVIDIA might actually acquire VIA. No word from Intel on this latest development, although it doesn't seem like it'll be affecting the Atom's status as the go-to processor in the short term. There's also unfortunately no indication as to exactly what sort of VIA-powered, Ion-based systems we can expect to see, although it certainly wouldn't be a surprise if they followed the Ion / Atom combo and went with a nettop first.
