OpenFrame: 'The iPhone of home phones'

With data integration in mobile handsets, it's no wonder home telephones haven't been able to keep up. But what happens when you're using a service like Verizon's FiOS and all of a sudden that boring handset has broadband data piped right into it? One example could be OpenFrame – a new home phone envisioned by John Sculley, former Apple CEO – that maybe-a-little resembles Apple's iPhone. The various devices are built on Freescale MX31 processors "with two 600-MHz ARM11 chips doing the heavy lifting" for features like streaming video, music, web surfing, and more. According to the manufacturer's chief executive, the heavily subsidized phones could be shipping out in four or five months straight from the carriers (no retail presence here). Though the phone was built specifically for services like FiOS, they're not yet saying if it's coming to FiOS. Why so shy, fellas?

New AT&T-Branded DECT 6.0 Cordless Phones

Advanced American Telephones, which manufactures AT&T-branded telephones under a license agreement with AT&T Intellectual Property, today announced availability of its 2008 cordless phone lineup, featuring new Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) 6.0 phone systems with state-of-the-art antenna technology for maximum range and interference-free clarity.

The new AT&T DECT 6.0 cordless phone family gives consumers the ultimate freedom to roam throughout their home. Independent Wyle lab studies found that the new AT&T phones provided up to a 190-feet range around or outside the home, compared to the 160-feet range offered by competing DECT phones. These new phone systems, including the SL82118, SL82218, SL82318, SL82418 and SL82518, come bundled with up to five handsets and range from $59.95-$129.95 — making them perfect for every budget and household.

For further flexibility, the AT&T DECT systems are expandable with up to 12 handsets and feature a sleek design with a simultaneous off-hook feature, enabling more than one system handset to be active on a call.

In addition to DECT 6.0 models, the 2008 AT&T product lineup features three new systems ideal for the home, small office or home study. The new TL74108 and TL76108 are 5.8 GHz corded/cordless phone systems, featuring Digital Spread Spectrum frequency-hopping technology that provides long range, top sound quality and high security. The TL74108 and TL76108 are loaded with value-added features, highlighted by the convenience and security of a corded base along with the flexibility of a cordless handset.

For example, the TL74108 features dial-in-base speakerphone, call transferring and is expandable up to four handsets. The TL6108, expandable up to eight handsets, features 7-party conferencing, two-line operation and two individual voice mailboxes. Both of these phone systems only require a single phone jack that allows consumers to plug in expandable handsets into a wall outlet without worrying about a phone jack.

Introducing the most sophisticated Motorola Analogue mobile radio. The GM1280 is designed to satisfy the most demanding user with the most exacting communications requirements. In addition to the features of the GM660, the GM1280 has an expanded keypad making calls and navigation easier. The radio’s extra large four line dot matrix display provides clear, immediate feedback making interactive features remarkably simple to read and operate. The GM1280 is supported by a range of Motorola Original Accessories including microphones, speakers, remote push-to-talk switches and in-vehicle and desktop mounting kits for an enhanced user experience.

Operator-friendly controls and user features include:

Signalling. The fully compliant MPT signalling package includes MPT1343, Regionet 43 and ANN modes of operation. Radios are configurable for up to 60 personalities including Talkgroup Select and Conventional signalling.

Data Messaging and MAP27 Board. Includes a built-in pager with the capability of receiving data messages. You can send data messages from the contact list or manually entered alphanumeric text from the keypad. By using the optional MAP27 board, the radio can communicate with external data devices.

Voice Recorder. A paperless notepad allowing you to store and retrieve messages.

Voice Messager. A voice prompt for callers to leave a message to be stored in the radio.

User Information. The large 4-line alphanumeric display contains icons for programmed features and operational awareness. This mobile radio provides separate distinctive tones plus name decode for many incoming calls. Alert and feedback tones can be setup in a variety of volume levels and sounds.

Ease of Use. Simple menu driven user interface including a full alphanumeric keypad makes the full power of GM1280 simple and intuitive to use.

Dynamic Regrouping. Provides over-the-air reconfiguration of the radio plus download of group identity in a meaningful alphanumeric form.

DTMF. Provided that your radio has access to a phone system you can make phone calls from your radio. Alternatively you can use DTMF tones in a number of ways, for example to steer an answering machine.

External Alarm. Activates the vehicle horn and/or lights on receipt of an incoming call, so you won’t miss a call even when away from your vehicle.

Car Radio Mute. Automatically mutes your in-car audio entertainment system to allow calls to be heard and sent without interference.

X-Pand™ Voice Compression and Low Level Expansion. Crisp, clear and strong audio quality in virtually any noisy environment. Low level expansion allows further improvements in audio quality by reducing noise usually heard during pauses in conversation.




Yaesu FT-857D

The Yaesu FT-857D is the worlds's smallest HF/VHF/UHF multimode amateur transceiver. It is the sucessor to the earlier FT-857. But the new D version adds the 60 meter ham band and includes the formerly optional DSP-2 Digital Signal Processing Unit.
